History
Midhat Pasha, the governor of the province of Niš, founded Funds of the Fatherland (Memleket Sandığı) in 1863 during the Ottoman Empire. It offered its services to the farmers of that time and operated with a state guarantee. In 1888, it changed its name to Agriculture Bank (Ziraat Bankası) and established its headquarters in Istanbul. During the war years, the bank’s policy suffered in several aspects until the war ended and the bank reopened as a unit. In 1973, it became a commercial bank. Through its years of history, it created new national and international institutions and offices. That has allowed it to become the largest bank in Turkey.
