It is a multinational organization located in Singapore and founded by Datuk Wee Kheng Chiang. It offers corporate, commercial, business, investment, and many more banking services to clients and companies. UOB is short for United Overseas Bank. It is one of the most important banks in Asia.

During the Great Depression, a banking institution with the name of the United Chinese Bank (UCB) was created on August 6, 1935. Datuk Wee Kheng Chiang founded this bank along with a small group of entrepreneurs. In 1956, it introduced the coin bank for children. It opens its first branch on Beach Road.

In 1965, UCB changed its name to United Overseas Bank (UOB) and opened its first international branch in Hong Kong. At the beginning of the 1970s, it established the 5-bar logo (which it currently has) to represent the bank. During this same decade, it opened several branches and agencies to expand internationally in Tokyo, London, and New York. Also, for the same purpose, it bought Chung Khiaw Bank (CKB) and Lee Wah Bank.

In the 1980s and 1990s, it continued to open offices to expand in Seoul, Beijing, Sydney, Xiamen, Vancouver, Yangon, and Shanghai. Similarly, it acquired big companies and banks such as Far Eastern Bank, Westmont Bank in the Philippines, and Radanasin Bank in Thailand.

To become a larger bank, in 2001, UOB merges with Overseas Union Bank Limited (OUB). In 2002, it continued to expand through several countries, especially in China, establishing branches in Shanghai and Beijing.
