TD Bank

TD (Toronto-Dominion Bank) is one of the multinational companies offering financial services based in Toronto, Canada. It allows the opening of accounts, bank cards, investments, loans, and credits to the inhabitants of each city where one of its branches is located.

History

Due to the need at that time to finance the country’s grain industry, merchants decided to create The Bank of Toronto in 1855. To achieve similar goals, a group of industrial workers founded The Dominion Bank in 1869. Both banks had the aim to grow rapidly. Therefore, they expanded to offer products and services through branches in various parts of Canada.

In the 1910s, The Dominion Bank took the first step to expand internationally. It opened branches in London (1911) and later, in New York (1919). The two entities merged to form the Toronto-Dominion Bank in 1955 and began offering new international financing services and VISA cards through its branches. It established its headquarters (Toronto-Dominion Center) in Toronto.

As of 1990, the bank acquired several essential institutions. It purchased the assets of Standard Chartered Bank of Canada, Central Guaranty Trust, and Waterhouse Investor Services. The company established an agreement with two of Canada’s most important banks in 1996, the Bank of Montreal (BMO) and the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), to form Symcor. Subsequently, it continued to make acquisitions such as Newcrest Capital, Canada Trust, Stafford Trading and Letco Trading, Laurentian Bank (its branches), TD Banknorth, Chrysler Financial (currently called TD Auto Finance) and more.
