History

The history of the bank dates back to the creation of the Commercial Travelers Savings Bank in 1891. Two years later, it was transformed into a fiduciary company under the name of Trust Company of Georgia. From 1910, it carried out a series of mergers to consolidate more as an institution and position itself in a better way. It joined with several ice and coal companies forming Atlantic Ice and Coal Company. In the following years, it acquired the Empire Cotton Oil Company and the Continental Gin Company.

In 1911, The People’s National Bank was created, becoming the First National Bank. It had financial problems during the Great Depression, and in 1973, it merged with other banks to form SunBanks. Just over ten years ago, SunBanks combined with Trust Company of Georgia to found SunTrust Banks, Inc. (as today).

Subsequently, it purchased several vital institutions. It placed “SunTrust” in the name of each of its subsidiaries. To continue growing, it acquired Crestar Financial Corporation, Robinson-Humphrey Company (SunTrust Robinson-Humphrey today), the National Trade Finance Corporation (NCF), and more.
