This bank, in its beginnings, was born under the name of Nutsspaarbank in 1817. It was the first savings bank in the country. It began with the objective of providing savings, mortgage, and loans to both companies and individuals because, at that time, people did not have sufficient financial resources to buy or build their own homes. Nutsspaarbank offered savings banks and funds to these people.
As time passed, more and more savings banks were established in the Netherlands. In order to grow in the country, several of these savings entities joined and formed the SNS Bank. The institution of SNS Reaal was established as the bank’s parent company in 1997 when it acquired REAAL Group (One of the largest insurers in the Netherlands) and SNS Group
Subsequently, SNS Bank made other acquisitions, including Regio Bank belonging to ING Bank for a significant amount of money. The bank was to be sanctioned due to non-compliance with its legal loan obligations. Therefore, the Dutch Government decided to nationalize it in 2013. Four years later, SNS Bank, together with its institutions, merged to create and give life to De Volksbank.
