Its history began in 1837 when the Colonial Bank of London (England) was created. In 1925, It was acquired, together with the National Bank of South Africa and the Anglo-Egyptian Bank, by Barclays Bank of London to form Barclays Bank. In 1975, it transferred its operations to the Barclays Bank of Jamaica, and the Jamaican government acquired all its shares.
Years later, it changed its name to National Commercial Bank Jamaica Limited (NCB). In the 1990s, the country experienced a financial crisis, and the bank had many losses. Therefore, it had to resort to government assistance in 1997. In 2019, the institution acquired Guardian Holdings Limited to increase its shares further.
