The origin of this bank dates back to 1825 with the creation of the Commercial Bank of Albany (NY), which subsequently changed its name to the National Commercial Bank of Albany in 1864. In 1849, Samuel H. Mather founded Society for Savings as a bank of saving. Later, in 1867, it built its headquarters in Cleveland, which was a 10-story skyscraper. In 1958, this company was further consolidated with the acquisition of several banks for 20 years. In this way, it was subsequently established as Society National Bank.
After the financial crisis of 1930, the bank offered its banking services to the people and merchants of that time. That allowed it to grow more, acquiring more customers, and becoming stronger financially.
To become a regional bank, Society Corporation bought Truscorp in 1990. On the other hand, further back in time, National Commercial joined First Trust to form First Commercial Banks in 1971. Key began to expand outside New York, making several acquisitions such as Home Federal Savings of Fort Collins, Puget Sound Bancorp, Empire Federal Savings and Loan, and Goldome Savings Bank. Both institutions, to achieve their goals to become a large bank, merged in 1994 under the name of KeyCorp. The entity maintained its headquarters in Cleveland.
