Groupe BPCE was founded in 2009, but its history dates back to 1818 with the creation of Caisse d’Epargne. It was created to provide all people of that time, regardless of gender or social class, banking services to manage and promote their savings.
Beginning in 1830, it began to establish a network of proximity of branches throughout several cities in the country with a considerable number of inhabitants. Later, in 1878, another essential banking entity called Banque Populaire was created, specially founded for the businessmen of that time.
In 2009, Caisse d’Epargne and Banque Populaire merged to form Groupe BPCE. They decided to create that institution due to the financial crisis that had occurred a year earlier in the country. In this way, it overcame those moments of economic problems and consolidated more as a banking group. In 2016, it bought the German bank Fidor. It also purchased the Oney Bank in 2019. Before that, it sold part of Nexity and Banca Carige (its subsidiaries).
