This group, in the beginning, was founded as Schweizerische Kreditanstalt (SKA) by Alfred Escher in 1856. It was created to finance the railway systems of that time in Switzerland. In 1870, it took the first step to expand internationally by opening a representative office in New York, United States. Six years later, it was established in the Paradeplatz building.
In the 1980s, the bank was helping in the development of the country by supporting various services that include financing, monetary systems, the establishment of an electrical grid, and more. As of 1900, it expanded nationally by opening its first office in Basel. After World War I, the entity took over, in part, the restructuring and financing of companies affected by the war. Thanks to that, it began to have everyone’s support, becoming the most important banking institution in the country.
It established a representative office in Paris in 1910. Later, in 1932, First Boston was created, which would be necessary for the bank in the future. Years later, it again focused on the United States and opened a subsidiary in New York. To consolidate more and grow financially, it merged with Schweizerische Bodenkredit-Anstalt in 1976.
In 1989, CS Holding was created and then established under the name of Credit Suisse Group. It continued its growth through acquisitions such as Bank Leu, Swiss Volksbank, and NAB (Neue Aargauer Bank).
