History

In 1784, the Bank of New York was created with a significant sum of capital. That was done thanks to the lawyer Alexander Hamilton, who was the one who founded the bank. Alexander McDougall was established as president of the institution. It is the first bank in New York that began trading on the stock market in 1792.

During the 19th century, the bank began granting a series of loans to the Government to control financial problems due to the economic crisis of that time. As of 1900, the entity expanded to obtain higher strength. It merged with the New York Life Insurance and Trust Company in 1922. Subsequently, it had several more mergers, with the Bank of Fifth Avenue in 1948, with the Empire Trust Company in 1966 and with Irving Bank Corporation in 1988. After that, the bank was established at its new headquarters, One Wall Street.

In 1994, it opened an office in China to gain a more significant international presence. It continued to acquire and merge with companies such as Boston Company, Dreyfus Corporation, JP Morgan Global Custody Business, Ivy Asset Management, and Pershing LLC. In 2003, it opened its first branch in Australia. Four years later, The Bank of New York Company joins Mellon Financial Corporation forming The Bank of New York Mellon Corp, also known as BNY Mellon.
