In 1881, merchants and business people decided to establish the bank in Barcelona to help finance and supply raw materials to local industries. In 1965, it began to expand along with the closest areas. In 1975, it expanded outside of Catalonia by establishing an office in Madrid and three years later, out of Spain (London). The bank grew thanks to the purchase of the NatWest Spain Group and the Bank of Asturias. It became the second institution to offer private banking when it acquired Banco Urquijo in 2006. In following years, it bought TransAtlantic Bank, Mellon United National Bank, Guipuzcoano Bank, CAM Bank, Banco Gallego and more.
