History

This bank began in 1835, when The Bank of Australasia was created through a merger with the Cornwall Bank in London, England. Cornwall Bank had formed seven years before. In 1852, a bank was founded in London that would be important for the future of The Bank of Australasia. That was The English, Scottish, and Australian Bank (ES&A).

Australia and New Zealand Bank Limited (ANZ Bank) was founded by the Union Bank of Australia in 1951. The Union Bank of Australia had been created by a group of people headed by George Fife Angas in 1837. The bank began to expand nationally and internationally. It established offices in Honiara (Solomon Islands), New York (United States), and in Tokyo, Japan, to grow even more as a banking institution.

ANZ Bank, in 1970, joined with ES&A to form Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited, further consolidating itself as a banking entity. Seven years later, it is established in Australia. From that moment on, it continued with its international expansion, building and buying a large number of branches in several countries. It opened offices in Malaysia, Singapore, Germany, Thailand, France, the Philippines, China, Vietnam, and many other countries. Also, it acquired the Bank of Adelaide (1979), Grindlays Bank (1984), PostBank (1989), and National Mutual Royal Bank Limited (1990),

In 1993, it established its headquarters in Melbourne, Australia. Subsequently, it partnered with a couple of institutions, among which was ING Group, to build the business in Australia and New Zealand.
